Chronic low back pain is one of the leading causes of adult disability globally. Currently there are no therapeutic options that target the commonest pathophysiology of back pain which is intervertebral disc degeneration. Intradiscal therapeutics aim to treat some aspects of the pathological disease process, by regenerating or assisting bio-physical characteristics of the intervertebral disc. Intradiscal therapies include biological therapy, cell-free implantation, and anti-inflammatory agents. There are no intradiscal therapies available, however research conducted into these areas will in time elucidate in the near future an effective intradiscal therapeutic for disc degeneration. This presentation reviews the horizon of this exciting area of development.
